Something worth noticing has been happening along the Foreside this year, and if you have been in Falmouth long enough to remember when Route 1 north of Bucknam felt like a stretch of parking lots, the shift is real. The dinner options are consolidating around two poles: a new mixed-use building on Route 1 that keeps announcing tenants, and a farm on the other side of town that just came back to life. In between, the Land Trust has quietly built a Friday-morning walking habit that a lot of neighbors have not caught up to yet. Here is how a resident might actually spend the back half of August.
The Route 1 stretch is filling in
The building to watch is The Wyeth at 267 US Route 1. Sapporo, the sushi restaurant that spent decades on Commercial Street in Portland, is relocating there and is under construction in the new mixed-use space. In the same building, Cafe Luna, the Scarborough café that opened on Route 1 in South Scarborough a little over a year ago, has announced its second location. That is two Portland-area names planting flags on the same Falmouth block within a single year.
Two doors down at 269 US Route 1, Jaffa opened its second location on September 1. The original is inside the Maine Mall, and co-owner Tareq Zayed told Mainebiz that the team had been looking for a spot outside a dense downtown, something closer to a comfortable community, and that Compass Commercial Brokers brought them the space. The menu spans Greek, Palestinian, and broader Middle Eastern dishes. Around the corner in the Falmouth Shopping Center at 251 US Route 1, Mindy's Munchies, a New Jersey chocolate-and-snack shop, opened its first Maine franchise on September 21.
None of these on their own would change the character of the town. Together, on a walkable half-mile of Route 1, they do.
Old Smith Farm is back on the calendar
The other pole is Old Smith Farm, which reopened this spring under new ownership after a long stretch of uncertainty. Jill Moses, whose Portland-area restaurant history includes $3 Deweys and Saltwater Grille in South Portland, is leading the ownership team along with Frank Curran of Harborview Properties. Chef Nate Feld, previously at Twelve in Portland, is running the kitchen with an emphasis on farm-to-table dishes and artisanal pizzas. Rachel Sagiroglu, who founded the travel and event company Experience Maine, is handling event programming.

Old Smith Farm has always been a special place for the Falmouth community, and as someone who lives and raises a family here, it means a great deal to be part of giving it new life.
The venue is keeping its private-event bookings and adding a public restaurant with pizza on the menu. For anyone who has driven past that property for years wondering when the lights would come back on, this is the summer.

None of these require a car trip out of town, and three of the four are free.
Friday mornings belong to the Land Trust
The Falmouth Land Trust is running a Friday-morning walk series with the Falmouth Memorial Library through the summer, rotating trails each week. The August schedule:
- August 1 at Falmouth Nature Preserve, 178 Foreside Rd
- August 8 at Tidewater Farm Preserve, 200 Presumpscot Point Rd
- August 15 at Blackstrap Hill Preserve, 369 Blackstrap Rd
The three preserves make an interesting sample set. Foreside sits on the water side of town near the Yacht Club stretch, Tidewater Farm sits at the mouth of the Presumpscot River with Cooperative Extension gardens on the property, and Blackstrap climbs to the highest point in Cumberland with an Appalachian Mountain Club-led loop of roughly four miles. If you have been meaning to see all three and never gotten around to it, the Land Trust has done the scheduling for you.
Registration is not required, but the library lists a signup so walkers get the location details and any weather updates.
Tidewater Farm is doing more work than most residents realize
Look at the calendar again. Tidewater Farm shows up on August 8 for the FLT walk. It shows up again on August 13 as the host for the Maine Outdoor Film Festival, back at the property for its fourth year, co-presented by the Falmouth Land Trust, the Chebeague & Cumberland Land Trust, and the Falmouth Cumberland Community Chamber of Commerce. The MOFF program runs about two hours with a ten-minute intermission and focuses on outdoor and conservation-themed films.
A guided walk led by Maine Master Naturalist Susan Gilpin covers the Cooperative Extension gardens on the property before dropping down to the Presumpscot. All free, all within a five-day window, all at the same address. If a resident wanted to introduce a visiting friend to what Falmouth looks like when it is showing its work, this is the address to bring them to.
Just south of town, Maine Audubon's Gilsland Farm has been running native plant walks on Monday evenings this summer, which slots into the same outdoor rhythm without any additional planning.
One more for the July-into-August calendar
The 5th Annual TeeOff4TMF golf tournament, benefiting the Travis Mills Foundation, runs on July 20 at The Woodlands Club at 39 Woods Rd. If you have never played Woodlands and have been looking for a reason, a benefit round for a Maine-based foundation supporting recalibrated veterans is a defensible one. What ties this all together
If you have lived here five years or fifteen, the read is this: Falmouth's late-summer week is no longer a choice between driving into Portland for dinner or staying home. The Wyeth block is going to keep filling in, Old Smith Farm has anchored the east side of town with a kitchen worth trying, and the Land Trust has quietly built the kind of programming that gives residents a reason to know their own trails better than the weekend tourists do. Tidewater Farm is the seam where the outdoor programming and the town's civic partnerships meet, and it is doing that work three or four times a month now.
Bring the out-of-town guests to Tidewater on a Thursday for the film festival, walk them through the Presumpscot the next morning, and put dinner reservations on the books at Old Smith Farm. That itinerary did not exist in Falmouth two summers ago. It does now.
